The Monkey is the first film ever authorized to adapt Stephen King’s short story — a “Dollar Baby” license granted by King himself. Shot across New York’s Capital Region with an almost entirely local cast and crew, it was Spencer Sherry’s writing and directing debut, and it premiered just days before Hollywood announced its own version.
Pete Shelburn thought he’d left it in the past. After a near-fatal accident — with his father dying and his brother refusing to make peace — the cymbal-clapping toy from his childhood finds its way home, and the people he loves begin to die.
